India Africa partnership


  • Speaking at the valedictory session of the national conference on India Africa relations in changing global order ,VP Venkaiah naidu has said that India and Africa have a lot of common interests and both have vital stakes in each other's progress,peace and prosperity
  • African continent is a large landmass and consist of 55 countries ,has 15 % of world population and is rich in minerals resources
  • India and Africa has long standing historical cultural economic ties and also political exchange based on South South Cooperation
  • Africa offers a great potential for development ,but India must harness quickly as other powers have already gained influence
  • Aspirational fast growing economies like Nigeria South Africa are eagerly looking for investments ,whilst other super powers exploit/scramble Africa for its mineral wealth and leave little in return.India's approach towards African development is of socioeconomic in nature keeping African people's interest at the center of its investments efforts

 Potential areas of cooperation

Trade:

  1. Trade between Africa and India has increased more than eight-fold from US$7.2 billion in 2001 to US$59.9 billion in 2017, making India Africa's fourth-largest national trading partner and still has potential to increase.

Security

  1. Energy security as countries like Sudan Nigeria are rich in oil resources ,also in terms of renewable energy India and Africa has already robust collaboration in international solar alliance
  2. Maritime security as Indian ocean is gaining international attention in recent times,especially with china's forays into the region.In security aspects India has to build up such projects or agreements which are mutually beneficial to both India and Africa for example India and Africa can work together in anti terror exercises ,intelligence sharing ,anti piracy etc

Human resource development 

  1. India should create more opportunities for African students to study in Indian universities ,when they return to Africa post completion of studies they would serve as India's ambassadors
  2. Also India's IT professional can help African people to utilise ICT for their livelihood benefits
  3. Develop African studies in Indian universities to further cultural understanding
  4. In promoting cultural ties ,Bollywood films and Indian diaspora play a important role

Way forward:

  • Focus on contemporary areas of collaboration and maintain sustained interaction at the highest levels
  • Agriculture is a good sector for cooperation as both India and Africa has huge tracts of agriculture land.An special purpose vehicle (SPV) must be setup by Indian government to incentivize private players to explore opportunities in this important sector
  • Africa also offers great potential for Joint development eg., Asia Africa Growth corridor an joint initiative of India and Japan towards infrastructure and community development
