  • On September 20 , global climate strike led by youngsters took place across many parts of the world
  • Recent events like heat waves in Europe  and unprecedented floods across many parts of world have awakened many people to the realities of climate change
  • But still the political and economic discourse has not changed much., rising tide of Nationalist politics across the world has made matters worse by prioritizing short term national interests over global emergencies
  • In such a political scenario ,the UN secretary general has convened a Global climate action summit
  • Summit aims to achieve two things:-
    1. Countries are urged to enhance pledges for action made as part of the Paris agreement on lower emissions. Even after repeated requests by the scientific community as well as youth movements ,the major economies of the world are still entrenched in the National politics.
    2. By inducing changes in economics around a set of action portfolios This includes accelerating transition towards low carbon energy future, making cities resilient to climate destruction etc. This economic program can be achieved easily with minimal disruption and costs .
  • India and Global climate emergency
    1. The weak global action against climate change is a worrying sign for India ,as India is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change
    2. India has always supported for a sustainable development future, India's switch to renewable are happening at a fast rate
    3. However there are also inconsistencies India story as a climate champion, the Government's plan on continued coal and fossil fuel in future sends mixed signals
  • Despite the laggard approach of developed nations ,India can lead the fight against global climate emergency and set an example to other developing nations by following a sustainable and low carbon future model for its domestic needs.

  • Ever since GST was implemented in 2016 , the GST council responsible for deciding the regulatory aspects of the indirect tax has had its hands full
  • Given the complexity of taxes that GST subsumed and replaced ,the GST council had to deal with teething troubles to ensure optimal outcome.
  • One of the major concerns for the GST council was the exploitation of loopholes by scrupulous players while availing refunds.
  • A huge number of cases have been unearthed by revenue intelligence officials and directorate general of GST intelligence regarding the fraud claims on input tax credit.
  • Against this backdrop the GST council has decided "in principle" to recommend linking Aadhaar with registration of taxpayers.
  • Aadhaar unique id linkage with tax information will prevent leakages and exploitation.
  • The GST Network has already made Aadhaar mandatory for new registrants post 2020.Now it's time for the GST council to follow the same suit by making Aadhaar linkage mandatory for tax refunds
