1) The Drum beaters of dystopia
This article cites the difference in narrative between Indian national media and the Western Global media over the coverage and reporting of events in Jammu and Kashmir .
While most of the national media plunged into patriotic duty of supporting the state's decision over that of the fundamental rights of a caged citizen , in stark contrast the global media reports were unmasking the suppression and violation of basic human rights
In the epoch of hyper nationalism ,Indian journalism is reverting to its historical and dutiful role of nation building through propaganda rather than highlighting people's issue .
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) recently mandated captioning for TV programming in order to make it accessible for the deaf or people with hearing problems.the examples in US shows how this could be implemented in a cost effective way
The policy impetus for this decision is rooted in the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act,2016 which made subtitles on TV a right.
The major challenge for the ministry now is to ensure compliance by all channels
Same Language Subtitling which the Government has mandated ,if implemented successfully is poised to make a contribution to (Sustainable Development Goals) SDG 4 on quality education as it is basically dependent on good reading skills.
The Government has done its part ,now it's time for the channels to provide inclusive program.
India's record in promoting occupational and industrial safety remains weak even after years of robust economic growth.
The recent tragedy in a Punjab firecracker factory and other such industrial accidents point to the need for a strong safety law.
It is well known that safe working conditions are also found to increase productivity of workers
Unfortunately successive Governments have not felt the necessity to ratify many fundamental conventions on ILO such as occupational safety and health conventions 1981.
Even the few steps taken by the government in this regard such as the Occupational safety health and Working conditions code,2019 are either piecemeal or non comprehensive in nature
Hence to prevent any unfortunate events in the future, comprehensive reform in existing bill is essential.
