1) The Amazon fires ,an alarm that lacks proportion

- The recent mass deforestation drive and man made forest fires in Brazil's Amazon forest has evoked widespread condemnation but this outrage is absent when it comes to Fossil fuel emissions
- The author of this article cites statistics from IPCC fifth assessment report AR5 and explains that emission from fossil fuel consumption and exploitation are more dangerous in comparison to meager emissions made by deforestation
- The effect of deforestation can be repaired slowly but Fossil fuel emissions cannot be put back into where they came from
- While the Western developed Nations were prompt in condemning amazon fires ,they conveniently circumvent the Paris agreement commitments to control global warming below 2 degree Celsius
- The current Brazil president Jair Bolsanaro is a known climate denier and undoubtedly his relaxation of environmental norms has worsened the situation ,but the area under fire in Amazon is lesser than their recent fires in Siberia ,congo , Canada
- The image of Amazon as poster child of conservation and biodiversity is the only plausible explanation that can be attributed to outrage over amazon forest fires while similar incidents in other parts of world were conveniently neglected
- The threat by French President to cancel EU - Mercosur trade deal to force Brazil and a noted US commentator proposals that major power could intervene militarily in developing country to tackle climate change shows a new low in the global North's pressure tactics on the south in dealing with climate change
- The Amazon and other terrestrial ecosystem undoubtedly offer more room to maneuver in dealing with global warming ,But without reducing fossil fuel emissions drastically and the global North paying back it's carbon debt by taking the lead there can be little hope towards meeting the climate change targets

2) A controversial transfer
- The Chief Justice of Madras high court,Vijaya kamlesh Tahilramani was recently transferred to Meghalaya high court.
- Although the Constitution provides for such transfers, it is extremely rare that senior most chief justice in the country is shifted from a large court with 75 judges to a relatively new and three judge strength High court. This has caused quite a furor in legal circles .
- Justice Tahilramani asked the collegium to reconsider the transfer but it was not considered and she eventually tendered her resignation.

- With this incident ,the Collegium's arbitrary and opaque procedure has once again come into the question, the collegium argument for transferring the justice Tahilramani on grounds of better administration seems fallacious as there are no known public complaint on her.
- The three judges case provided collegium(Chief Justice of India and four senior most SC judges )to decide on higher judges elevation or transfer subject to intelligence check by the government
- The collegium system addressed the Independence of Judiciary from executive but it failed to address the opaqueness and personal opinion involved in decision making.

3) Belated Realization , On Trump's decision to halt Taliban peace deal

- After a recent terror attack by Taliban which killed a US soldier and 11 other people , President Trump has halted the ongoing peace negotiations and a proposed camp david summit between Taliban and Afghan Government
- The US represented by Zalmay Khalilzad has been negotiating with taliban a peace deal with US assuring withdrawal of its troops and taliban assuring that Afghanistan will not serve as host to terror elements.
- But even while negotiating this peace deal taliban has been carrying out deadly terror attacks and has used these attacks as a bargaining tool to comply US to its terms
- The US action of acceding to Taliban terms of not engaging with the civilian Government and failure of US to negotiate a ceasefire during peace talks has only emboldened Taliban
- A Peace deal would serve no one's interest if Taliban is allowed to get away with repeated murders
